How to Format a Windows Xp Computer



  1. Start your computer and press del key(alternately f10,f9) to go to the bios.
  2. In bios advance features(alternately boot options) change first boot device to hdd or hdd0 and second boot device to cdrom.
  3. Insert Your XP CD and press F10(Save), Yes.
  4. In the next dos prompt "Press Any Key To Boot From CD/DVD " press any key
  5. The Windows Xp setup loads here the first window appears press "ENTER"
  6. In the next window press "F8" to agree and "ESC" to don't repair(Repair would be studied in detail in other topics)
  7. Now the partition window appears here press "D" to delete a partition by selecting it and "L" to confirm(if you are on C drive it asks for "Enter " to confirm).
  8. Repeat the steps if you want all your partitions to be deleted.
  9. Next press "C" to create partition and "Enter" to confirm(if you want to create more partitions specify in bytes 1mb=1000bytes eg: if you want two 20gb partition from single 35gb drive enter 20000 and 15000 respectively(not exactly 15000 as some space gets reserved))
  10. Now the step is formatting by selecting a partition press "Enter", in the next window select either "Format as Fat quick" for 20gb or less or "Format with NTFS" (Fat- File Allocation Table NTFS- New Technology File System).
  11. Windows xp starts copying files and reboots automatically.
  12. Now the 39 minutes procedure follows
  13. At 33 minutes the window appears click next , Enter the key provided at the CDrom click Next.
  14. At the next window click next and set the timezone, date and time.
  15. At Network settings windows just click next after installing windows reboots automatically.
  16. At windows start it asks for display settings click "ok" and then "yes".
  17. The First time setup window loads. Enter the relevant information in the following windows like username, registration,etc.
  18. The Windows XP Format is Complete.
